Managing money can be hard for adults, so it’s no wonder that it’s hard for parents to discuss money matters and teach good money management to their kids. At CCC, we don't do a lot of financial education for kids, but when I saw this video on CNNMoney.com, I just had to pass it along! In conjunction with PNC Bank, Sesame Street is presenting simple concepts on saving and spending for children aged 3 to 5 through a program called “for me, for you, for later: First Steps for Spending, Sharing and Saving”. They’ve introduced segments with Elmo and other characters on the show and have companion pieces on their website www.sesamestreet.org/parents/save. You can preview the program by following the link below, but I highly urge parents to check out the website for more information. I like their approach to simplifying money into three categories – some for saving, some for spending, and some for sharing (charitable giving might be the grown up way of saying this) – which is a good lesson for all adults, even the most money savvy among us.
